OPENLIGHTEN

openlighten aims to spark intrigue, stir inquisitiveness, stimulate curiosity, open minds, and in doing so, encourage people to think, question, wonder, explore, dream, understand and grow. The way this is achieved, is through abstract illustrations, based on a concept/idea/fact/thought whose visual representation is not immediately or irrefutably obvious. This acts as a filtration system - puzzling some, being overlooked by others, but stirring curiosity in those who are the correct target demographic – people still capable of significant free thought, wonder and question. I HAVE A BLOG TOO

All manner of rubbish and design (of my own) is up, and updated, regularly:

PyroVesten Graphic Design Blog

WHAT ON TERRA-FIRMA'S THIS THEN?

You're essentially viewing my online Graphic Design portfolio. A very slim selection of print, web and motion work are on show (commercial & non-commercial), along with a few ramblings on design, and all manner of other stuff. Updates will be erratic - much like the content.

AVID INTERESTS &c

I'm a nerd at heart, and have an affinity for all manner of geek-matter and also find interest in the most unusual of places. I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid, and still do, but I'm realistic. Below, a few fascinations/passions:

CITYTALE - PRINT

Below, an experimental typographic exercise. I created 20 double-sides cards, typographically interpreting the travels of commuters on Sydney’s wonderfully efficient, super fantastic CityRail transport network. I focused on the conversations, sounds, feelings, visuals, and the overall experience of each journey. Everything from uncomfortably cramped CBD-to-home peak-hour trips, 2 hour ventures to the Blue Mountains, short stints through the City Circle, and a myriad of others. GRAND HYPERLINKS

I endorse these bodacious destinations.

DISPROPORTIONALLY STRETCHING TYPE? FAIL, STUDY SHOWS.

An independent study has demonstrated, unequivocally, that no more a vomit-inducing graphic design gaffe exists. Talks are underway to criminalise this unsporting practice, with results expected soon. Irony below.

MATHEMATICS

Surely the most (aesthetically) appealing aspect of beloved mathematics is the potential for constructing wondrous, or at the very least, stimulating and intriguing data visualisations (visualizations for the yanks). Some designers will argue that these are not "design", but I counter that the same could then be said for anything obeying by a grid for layout.

PSYCHOLOGY OF DESIGN FOUND TO BE PARAMOUNT

I'm Pyro. I'm innately interested in the psychological aspects of design. Visual communication that functions psychologically and intellectually is what excites me, and what I aim to craft. In design, there should be a reason for, and intent behind, everything. If that means rivers in the narrow columns of text on this portfolio, which sets out to aesthetically replicate many features of a newspaper (whilst flexing my CSS & HTML skills), then so be it. I'd like to hear from like-minded individuals to converse, mooch/share knowledge, and gain insight and perspective.

Directly below, a few commercial and non-commercial identities I have designed - from Music Festivals, Record Labels and Black Metal bands to Food Manufacturers and Public Information campaigns. There’s more than meets the eye. If you’re curious about the meaning behind/reason for anything, do ask – you may be surprised. I’m available for identity design any time.

PACKAGING DESIGN

I’ve been designing for print since 2005. In that time I’ve done my share of Posters, CD Artwork & Packaging, and more recently, Publication Design and Packaging Design. From this point forward, I plan to focus predominantly on Packaging. I find it the greatest challenge and the most rewarding print design pursuit.

I've been doing motion work since late 2006. Below, a fragmentation of excerpts from some of that work.
